Barrett Bralettes and Acacia Panties made with Fabric from San Francisco Area Fabric Stores

I’m heading off on a vacation to France soon and I’ve been busy making lingerie for my trip. Nothing is better on a trip than having lots of pretty new lingerie in my suitcase!  If you’ve been following me on Instagram (@jolirosestudio), you know how I love the Barrett bralette which was designed by master lingerie designer and maker, Madalynne.  This is a free pattern and it is available here.  I love this bralette for three reasons.  It fits like a dream.  It is quick and easy to make.  It is really, really comfortable.  I don’t always like to wear an underwire bra, especially when I am traveling, and this bralette fits the bill.  All of these bralettes are lined with powernet.  This bralette is supportive, easy to care for and pretty.  You can make infinite modifications to this pattern to make it your own; I have many more Barretts in mind for future sewing projects.

I made four matching panties for each bralette using my new favorite panty pattern  from Megan Nielsen, called Acacia.  This pattern is free when you subscribe to Megan Nielsen’s newsletter, here.  This pattern can easily be altered to make a high-waisted panty.  I learned about this panty pattern when I attended Underwear Extravaganza at Hello Stitch Sewing Studio in Berkeley, CA on National Underwear Day which was on August 4.  Pictures of the panties I made there are at the end of this post.  If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, you really owe it to yourself to visit this studio.  They have a plethora of classes for every skill level, as well as days and evenings where you can sew to your hearts content on their fabulous sewing machines and sergers.  While you are in the Berkeley area, you should stop by and shop at Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics which is a wonderful, family-owned store  They sell all kinds of notions and fabric for making lingerie, as well as for garment and quilt making.  If you don’t live in the area, they have a website!  The lingerie elastics and rose-colored bra findings are from Tailormade Shop.  I love this on-line shop for top quality lingerie making supplies.

I purchased fabric for these sets at three family-owned stores here in the Bay Area. The black and red rose fabric is a double brushed poly spandex from the Fabric Outlet in San Francisco. This store has nice fabric at amazing prices.  They also have an on-line store at Cali Fabrics.

The aqua blue mesh is from Britex Fabrics in San Francisco.   This is a high-end fabric store that is a destination for sewists all over the world.  They have the finest fabrics and notions in every price point, including specialty lace from Europe.  Looking for Harris Tweed or Thai silk?  Britex will have it!

This white stretch lace fabric is from a wonderful store, Piedmont Fabrics  in Oakland.  I just discovered this store and my good friend, Julie, and I have visited it a number of times recently.  The owner is so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful; she has top of the line fabric and notions.

Below are pictures of panties that I made at Underwear Extravaganza at Hello Stitch Studio.  The white knit cotton and the pink and white stripe cotton fabric are from Stonemountain and Daughter and the pink polka dot polyester and pink print cotton knit fabric are from the Fabric Outlet.  Yes, that is kitty, Sophie, trying to get into the picture!

I always love to get your thoughts on sewing, patterns and fabrics.  Have you made lingerie before?  Do you have a favorite pattern?  Where do you buy lingerie making supplies? Please scroll down to the comments at the bottom of this site and leave your feedback.  Merci et au revoir!

  1. Barbara, you have been busy. I love your idea of bringing a suitcase full of beautiful lingerie to France. What a fabulous thought. And you’ve done it. It’s all stunning, so luxurious. I love your sets and combinations of fabrics and trims. I have never made lingerie and you’ve really inspired me to give it a try. You’re right, We’re very fortunate in the Bay Area to have such a selection of local fabric shops. And I get to go with my good friend!
